I strongly oppose the extension of the Foothill-South Toll Road (SR 241). If constructed, this project will profoundly compromise the popular San Onofre State Beach and the San Mateo Campground. This is one of the last areas of coastal land available to the public in Southern California, and needs to be protected at all costs.

Trestles, the “Yosemite of surfing”, is at risk of damaged wave formation by altering the natural sediment flow of the San Mateo Creek. I am also concerned that polluted runoff from the road will impact the pristine water quality at Trestles beach. This road project will destroy the unique coastal wilderness experience at Trestles that cannot be found elsewhere in the region. Not only will the road diminish the beauty and integrity of our coastline, but it will fundamentally set a dangerous precedent for our State Park system. Further, it is worrisome that this road will devastate wildlife habitat and ultimately create urbanization and poorly planned development.

Please protect San Onofre State Beach by opposing the Foothill-South Toll Road. Over 20 million people live at the door step of this beautiful park. Families from Los Angeles to San Diego, and throughout California, rely on the Park for vacations and recreation, and we need your help to protect it.

I am apalled that this would ever be considered a solution to the problems of traffic in southern california. I am offended that it also a TOLL ROAD on TAXPAYER PRESERVED PROPERTY! We are a democracy not a dictatorship and the precedent that this would set is ridiculous to even suggest as being ethical. In the same year that you would vote down taxation and state grown industrial hemp which served as the #1 cash crop for canada last year, you turn around close hospitals, and seek to save and generate funds by accepting development of this land and destroying a nationally preserved park which has been a cherished and sacred part of our land for over 30 years. That’s just bullshit. Citizens will not stand for this and will oppose this development by whatever means necessary. To bring harm to over 2/3rds of a national park is unamerican, and poor stewardship of the land. You should be ashamed of yourself. Leaving on a bad note like this will also greatly harm your career through by bad press as well so keep that in mind as well.

State parks are not up for grabs, and the quality of this park is especially not up for grabs. It is a treasured gem, a much needed and shining jewel of an oasis in an ever thickening jungle of urban decay and futility for generations to come. Don’t make this mistake, don’t make this be your legacy for southern california, don’t make this choice as the most horrible decision ever. It’s bad enough we endure the oppression of the Irvine company, infringing on our rights, and violating the antitrust acts to the extreme here in orange county, must we also now try to look the other way as one of our great state parks is raped of her beauty and irreplacable natural landscape? We will not tolarate it. If you attempt to push this through you will only be awakening a sleeping giant.

Please don’t make the greatest mistake of your life. Keep trestles a state and national treasure. You can never rebuild what you are attempting to take away.
